Eco Friendly Baltimore Hotel Recognized for Contributions to Green Travel

BALTIMORE, MD–(Marketwire – November 30, 2010) – TownePlace Suites Baltimore BWI Airport hotel was recognized for its contributions to sustainable tourism and green travel in Baltimore by The Maryland Office of Tourism Development at the 30th Annual Tourism and Travel Summit in Annapolis, Maryland.

The TownePlace Suites BWI extended stay hotel’s innovations in building construction, purchasing from local companies and promoting green practices not only to their employees, but to their guests as well, earned them this distinguished award.

The green hotel in Baltimore has found unique ways to incorporate sustainable practices into its daily operations. The hotel is recognized for its in-depth recycling program along with a waste neutral breakfast that produces 4,000 lbs of top soil each year. High end bulk soap dispensers were installed to eliminate 40,000 small plastic bottles from going to the landfill. Low flow plumbing, native and adaptive landscaping conserve water. Front Desk agents wear uniforms made from recycled 2 liter plastic bottles. The BWI business hotel lodging also purchases wind credits that return clean air into the atmosphere. These innovative ideas, among many others, are what earned the BWI lodging the Maryland tourism award.

DBED Secretary Christian Johansson and Assistant Secretary for the office of Tourism, Film and the Arts Hannah Byron made the presentations during an awards luncheon. “The winners exemplify Maryland’s ability to transform our rich heritage and diverse landscape into products that travelers want and enjoy,” Johansson said. “These recipients are innovative, dedicated and forward-thinking travel professions,” Byron added. “They epitomize the ‘best of the best’ in Maryland tourism.”

The Maryland Tourism Awards are open to all individuals, private businesses and non-profit organizations offering a tourism product or service in Maryland. A panel of judges representing Maryland’s tourism community reviews each nomination.
